"We wanted to create something that would not only grab the listener's attention but also transport them to a different world," says Unbelievable Mayhem's lead vocalist, Alex. "The artwork is a reflection of our music – dark, intense, and full of chaos." The band's debut album is a sonic journey through the depths of human emotion, exploring themes of pain, despair, and ultimate redemption. The artwork, therefore, needed to be something equally as captivating, a visual representation of the turmoil and chaos that lies within.
The Symbolism Behind the Artwork
So, what secrets lie behind the abstract, dreamlike quality of the album cover? Schmersal, who has worked with numerous heavy metal bands in the past, chose to focus on images that reflected the band's music and message. He wanted the artwork to be more than just a pretty picture; he wanted it to be a narrative that itching to be unraveled.
"The initial concept was to create a sense of unease and foreboding," explains Schmersal. "We wanted the viewer to feel as if they were stepping into a world where nothing made sense – a world of pure chaos." To achieve this, Schmersal turned to the use of subtle hints of biblical symbolism, juxtaposed with natural imagery, the result being an unsettling and hypnotic effect.
Upon closer inspection, fans will discover hidden symbols scattered throughout the artwork. A giant succulent, reminiscent of the flesh of the biblical, green apple, sits atop a twisted pyre, surrounded by swaddling flames. Schmersal explains, "The succulent is a representation of the 'fruit of knowledge,' a temptation that ultimately leads to pain and suffering." The pyre, on the other hand, symbolizes the inevitable end to life's journey – a harbinger of transformation and rebirth.
The Inspirations Behind the Artwork
When creating the artwork, Schmersal drew inspiration from various sources, from classical art movements to natural wonders of the world. "We wanted to bring the unknown and the unexplained into our world," says Schmersal. "The artwork is full of allusions to everything from Plato's shadows to the mysticism of ancient civilizations." The result is an immersive experience that captures the essence of Unbelievable Mayhem's sonic journey – a complex blend of light and darkness.
Fans have praised the artwork for its unique blend of aesthetics, calling it a work of "anti-beauty" that perfectly reflects the music.
